Get the knowledge and skills necessary to progress on to Higher Education degree courses including physiotherapy, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, sports science, sports rehabilitation, podiatry, physiology and midwifery.

Access courses are designed to enable people aged 19+ to gain a qualification which is accepted by universities as an alternative to A Levels. Access courses are delivered over one year as opposed to the two years required for A Levels. They are ideal for anyone who left school without formal Level 3 qualifications, or for people who wish to change career without having to do two years of A levels. You will learn in an adult only environment.

Course Content

An Access to HE Diploma in Health and Human Sciences could be your first step towards a career in areas related to health care or health science. This programme provides a thorough grounding in scientific principles in preparation for study in the areas of health care or health science. All students will take units in study skills, biology, chemistry and the role of the health or social care professional.
Your course will include:

Study Skills: including Essay Writing, Writing Standard English, Finding and Reading Information, Speaking and Listening Skills, Arithmetic Skills for Health Studies, Becoming a Reflective Practitioner

Chemistry: Patterns in Chemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Biological Molecules and Enzymes, Introduction to Nutrition

Health Care: The Role of the Health or Social Care Professional

Biology: Cells, Human Tissues and Systems, The Blood, The Cardiovascular System, The Reproductive System, The Endocrine System, The Musculo-skeletal System, Sports Injuries

Your Access course will be very enjoyable, but also requires real dedication and commitment if you are going to succeed. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all learners. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time. We recommend that you all ow a minimum of 15 hours per week outside of class time for personal study. We endeavour to prepare students for the demands of a University degree course in just nine short months. It is therefore essential that you think about how you are going to balance work, family and social life with your studies. Assessment of the Access to HE diploma is by coursework completed throughout the year. You will be expected to do regular reading and written work in addition to your attendance in classes. Applicants for many degrees in the health professions will sit entry tests in English and Maths at the university, as well as attend a group or individual interview. Applicants are expected to show a high degree of verbal and written communication skills. For those interested in health profession degrees work experience in a relevant health or care setting is normally an essential entry requirement (either through paid employment or voluntary work).

Entry Requirements

For your application to be considered you must be 18 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date

You should have a minimum of GCSE English Language grade C/4 or Functional Skills English Level 2 and either GCSE Maths grade C/4 or Functional Skills Maths Level 2. If you have overseas qualifications, please check with your universities if they require you to have UK GCSEs or Functional Skills or IELTS. For this course you should have IELTS 5.5 as a minimum plus a Maths qualification equivalent to GCSE Maths (NARIC equivalency).

If you wish to study nursing, midwifery or physiotherapy, you should also have relevant work or voluntary experience in the health care sector.

First Class Requirements

You should bring along an A4 writing pad as well as a selection of pens. We recommend that you also have a scientific calculator. You need to bring these resources with you to each session unless directed by the tutor.

Attendance Requirements

Your attendance is required at each and every session. You are expected to have 100% attendance. If you feel you can't commit to this expected level of attendance, then you should consider whether this is a suitable course for you. Regular attendance of 100% (apart from exceptional circumstances) is needed to ensure that you are able to cover all of the course content and assessment successfully.

Assessment Methods

Your assessment is continuous throughout the year. Assessment will be by essays, written reports, exams, presentations and portfolio. You must keep to deadlines for these assessments, or this may impact on your grade

Additional Information

Please be aware that this is an intensive & demanding course. There is support available, but you should expect to do a minimum average of 12 to 15 hours of homework per week. Please be aware that this may vary throughout the year, and at some times you may need to spend more time studying than others.

Please be aware that this is a blended learning course, with some sessions onsite in college and some sessions online via MS Teams. The timetable is as follows
Monday 9.30-12.00 and 13.00-15.30 online
Tuesdays 9.30-12.00 and 13.00-15.30 in college (Parkshot, Richmond)
Wednesdays 9.30-12.00 in college and 18.00-20.30 online
