Claire Tomalin speaking on Jane Austen next week at Richmond Society

For their October speaker event the Richmond Society is delighted to present Claire Tomalin to speak on “Jane Austen – a life”. Claire is one of Jane Austen's biographers, local to Richmond, and considered an expert on Austen's life.

2017 is the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, a fact that has already been commemorated by Jane Austen's appearance on a bank note.

Of all the biographers of Austen, Richmond's own Claire Tomalin is recognised to be among the best, if not THE best. Some of the press reactions to her biography:

'As near perfect a life of Austen as we are likely to get: intelligent, feeling, suggestive'  - Carmen Callil, Daily Telegraph.
'Tomalin has written a biography that reflects Austen's own exacting standards, a book that radiates intelligence, wit and insight'  -
Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times.
'Of all the Austen biographies, this is the best ... leaves the reader with a much deeper appreciation of the circumstances and motivation behind the creation of those six perfect novels' Harpers & Queen
'I cannot think that a better life of Jane Austen than Claire Tomalin's will be written for many years'  - Philip Hensher, Mail on Sunday.
